On 21 March 2024, the University of the West Indies convened a symposium on “Stimulating Solutions: Combating Crime and Criminality in Trinidad and Tobago” at the Daaga Auditorium. The Symposium featured specialists from the criminal justice sector. The Academy was represented by its chairman, the Hon Mr Justice Winston Anderson. Justice Anderson spoke to the solutions or recommendations presented in the Needham’s Point Declaration adopted at the end of the 7th CCJ Academy Biennial Law Conference held at Hilton Hotel, Needham’s Point, in Barbados on 18-20 October 2023. The Declaration addresses 6 thematic areas and contains 59 recommendations. Justice Anderson highlighted that these recommendations which called for reform in all areas of criminal justice including the police, prosecution, and judiciary, supported by legislative initiatives and provision of the required resources. He called for accountability for the discharge in the discharge of the State’s responsibility to protect its citizens and residents from crime and criminality. See his remarks here.
