On Tuesday, 25 June 2024, the Chairman of the Academy delivered virtual remarks on the “Climate Litigation, Access Rights And Environmental Justice” to the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute’s (CANARI) “Climate Litigation and Access Rights: Strengthening environmental justice in the Caribbean” workshop. CANARI partnered with the Corporación Fiscalía del Medio Ambiente (FIMA) to facilitate this regional workshop to strengthen the capacities of environmental lawyers in the Caribbean regarding climate litigation and the implementation of the Escazú Agreement as a means to close the ‘access to climate justice gap’. The rationale for the workshop was informed by the recognition that there has been limited integration of the principles and standards outlined in the Escazú Agreement with the climate change challenges confronting Latin America and the Caribbean. They were keen to ensure that Caribbean experts and thought leaders on environmental governance and climate justice are part of the facilitation and team of technical specialists delivering the workshop.
