Mission, Vision, Values

The mission, vision, focus and values of the CCJ Academy For Law are grounded in its founding documents (including its articles of association) and in the memorandum of understanding with the Caribbean court of justice.

Our Mission

To create initiatives and programmes that showcase the place of law in economic and social development and to develop institutional linkages with national, regional, and global partners that facilitate the maturing and sustainability of these initiatives and programmes in the interest of all Caribbean peoples.

Our Vision

To become the premier Caribbean institution for providing and advancing catalytic support for the establishment, maintenance, and improvement of legal regimes that facilitate sustainable regional development.

Key Objectives

To participate and provide thought leadership as an institution in the active pursuit of solutions to legal and social problems that are prevalent in the Caribbean region.
To promote the advancement in education and training in international law, discussinglegal concepts and rules in particular areas such as, general international law, international trade law, international investment law, intellectual property law, environmental law, and regional integration law.
To instigate and encourage debate on the role and content of the discipline of Comparative Law bearing particularly in mind that the major traditions of the common law and civil law systems are represented in the Member States of CARICOM over which the CCJ exercises appellate and original jurisdiction.
To develop programmes to introduce innovations and enhance practical learning in legal practice and court administration and a deeper understanding of the role of both in developing the rule of law and in promoting affordability of and access to justice.

To provide educational initiatives alongside The Council of Legal Education, National Bar Associations, and other legal education institutions for the younger generations of the legal profession.
To administer seminars and training programmes for Caribbean jurists in the broadest sense: judges, attorneys, and others.
To develop, coordinate and facilitate seminars, workshops, exchanges, and special lectures centered around educating others on important and new emerging areas of law.
To recognize and celebrate the contribution of eminent and outstanding jurists to the development of the Caribbean society.
To maintain an attractive website as the critical interface between the Academy and its stakeholders, providing information, both current and archived, for all interested persons.

Principle Guiding the CCj Academy for Law

Functioning as a high-level catalytic entity for legal discourse, research, teaching, and project engineering, the Academy:

Provides a forum for discussing legal concepts and rules in the areas particularly of general international law, international trade law, regional integration law, and comparative law.
Provides advanced tutelage in International Law and Comparative Law to achieve and maintain a high level of awareness of, and advocacy and passion for, regional integration law and Caribbean jurisprudence.
Instigates and encourages debate and facilitates training and evaluation in the development of problem-solving capability in relation to legal issues confronting the Caribbean society.
Delivers programmes to enhance practical learning in court administration and a deeper understanding of the role of court administration in judicial independence and accountability and in promoting access to justice.
Develops ideas and programmes to decrease backlogs in case determinations and enhance access to justice in the judiciaries of the region based on notions of judicial independence and accountability.
Deliver forums and programmes to enhance practical learning in court administration and problem-solving in a wide array of fields that enhance legal security and promote justice and the rule of law
Encourages the acceptance of the appellate jurisdiction of the Caribbean Court of Justice by all Caribbean States participating in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
